About Us

Created in 1999, the Maine Cancer Consortium is Maine’s statewide cancer prevention, detection, and care partnership. The goal of the Consortium is to reduce the burden of cancer in Maine by working collaboratively on cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, rehabilitation, survivorship, palliation and end-of-life care.

Membership to the Consortium is open to anyone committed to furthering the mission. Representatives include those from public and private organizations involved in all aspects of cancer prevention, control, and care.

Examples of Consortium accomplishments include:

• Development of a consensus statement on colorectal cancer screening guidelines.
• Passage and implementation of LD2109 which mandates insurance coverage of colorectal cancer screening for eligible Mainers in accordance with national screening guidelines.
• Collection of Maine’s only data on the needs of cancer survivors.
• Assessment of quality of life of individuals at the end-of-life in Maine’s long-term care institutions and Veterans Homes.
• Implementation of skin cancer prevention activities in elementary, middle and high schools, as well as municipal parks and recreation departments.
• Adminstration of grants to eight hospitals and 10 community organizations to increase colorectal cancer awareness and screening.
• Sponsorship of an educational series to increase healthcare professionals’ awareness of genetic screening, skin and colorectal cancer prevention and detection.
• Assessment of cancer risk factors and end-of-life care needs among several minority populations in Cumberland County.
