The Melanoma Foundation of New England (MFNE) has been an invaluable part of the Maine Cancer Consortium for several years. Members of the dedicated MFNE staff provide leadership for the Skin Cancer Workgroup, and the organization as a whole supports the skin cancer prevention and detection activities of the Consortium. One such example is the $20,000 grant that was provided to Maine hospitals in 2008 for the statewide implementation of the Skin Cancer Workgroup’s No Sun for Baby Program.

The commitment and involvement of MFNE has been an integral part of the progress made towards reducing the burden of skin cancer in Maine—a contribution that has not gone unnoticed. In March 2009, MFNE will be presented with the prestigious Gold Triangle Award, an award given by the American Academy of Dermatology for, “significant contributions to the specialty of dermatology.” This honor is being bestowed upon MFNE for their work in alerting teenagers to the dangers of tanning. Your Skin Is In, a successful no-tanning pledge program for proms, is now being implemented in its second year in Maine and other New England states.
